Anna Perepechai is a visual artist and activist, born in Poltava and raised in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine. Her artistic practice engages both visually and textually with socio-political issues and transformations, particularly in formerly Sovietized societies and within public and private spaces. Her current work explores collective memory and the psychological impact of trauma. Since arriving in Germany as a volunteer in 2014, she has also examined the Soviet legacy and its misinterpretations, as well as the colonial ambitions of empires, from the perspective of an Eastern European migrant. Shifting between conceptual documentary photography and experimental, camera-less methods, her work opens multiple layers of context and invites open interpretations. Anna Perepechai is currently completing her diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig in the photography class of Prof. Tina Bara. Since 2022, shortly before the beginning of the Russian full-scale war against Ukraine, she has also been voluntarily documenting Ukrainian demonstrations and events in Leipzig as a member of the Ukrainian-German initiative group Freundeskreis der Ukraine in Leipzig. This website is currently undergoing renovation. In the meantime, you are welcome to check out Anna Perepechai’s work on Instagram and donate to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
